Power Plant Maintenance & Millwright Servicesin Northwest Indiana & Chicagoland
Quick overview
South Shore Industrial provides equipment rebuilds, pipe welding, laser alignment, fan balancing, preventive maintenance and 24/7 emergency repair for power generation plants across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland. Our crews work on the pumps, fans, drives and piping around turbines and boilers, and fit the work into your outage schedule.
What causes forced outages in a power plant?
Power plants can't afford surprises. Most forced outages start with rotating equipment, piping or auxiliary systems that wore out between planned outages.
Fan and blower vibration
Draft fans and blowers drift out of balance and alignment. Vibration builds until bearings fail.
Pump wear
Feedwater, cooling water and auxiliary pumps wear seals, bearings and impellers under constant duty.
Piping failures
Heat, pressure cycling and erosion wear out piping, supports and connections.
Tight outage windows
Planned outages pack a lot of work into a short window, and it all has to be done before restart.
Ash and dust handling
Ash handling, dust collection and conveyors wear quickly on abrasive material.

What does SSI do for power plants?
We keep the rotating equipment, piping and auxiliary systems in power plants running between outages and help get outage work done on time. Our crews handle equipment rebuilds, pipe welding, laser alignment, fan balancing, preventive maintenance and 24/7 emergency repair across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland.
Downtime in power generation has serious consequences, so reliability comes first. Our team has worked with turbines, boilers and the equipment that supports them. We focus on the pumps, fans, drives and piping that most often cause forced outages.
Which power plant equipment do you work on?
We work on the auxiliary and balance-of-plant equipment that keeps a unit online. That is where most of the wear happens and where a millwright and fabrication contractor adds the most value.
| Equipment | Common problem | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Draft fans and blowers | Vibration, imbalance, bearing failure | Fan balancing and alignment |
| Pumps | Seal leaks, bearing and impeller wear | Pump rebuilds |
| Gearboxes and drives | Heat, noise, gear wear | Gearbox rebuilds |
| Coupled drives | Misalignment, coupling wear | Laser alignment |
| Piping and supports | Erosion, cracking, leaks | Welding and pipe fabrication |
| Dust and ash systems | Wear, leaks, airflow loss | Baghouse and dust collection |
Do you work on equipment around turbines and boilers?
Yes. Our team has experience with turbines, boilers and the equipment that supports them. On those systems, we focus on the work a millwright and fabrication crew does best: the pumps, fans, drives, piping, supports and platforms around the main equipment.
That includes rebuilding and aligning the pumps and motors that serve the unit, balancing draft fans, welding and repairing piping and supports, and fabricating access platforms and structural steel. When an original part is obsolete, our machine shop can reverse-engineer and machine a replacement so the unit isn’t waiting on a long lead time.
How do you support planned outages?
We support outages by planning early and doing as much as possible in the shop. Before the unit comes down, we walk the job with your team, list the equipment to rebuild, and stage parts and pipe spools. During the outage, our crews work to your schedule.
That planning keeps the outage on track. Our crews know what they’re walking into, parts are already on hand, and the equipment that comes back online has been aligned and checked.
How do you prevent problems between outages?
Our preventive maintenance program catches wear before it forces a shutdown. Typical work includes:
- vibration checks on fans, pumps and drives;
- laser alignment after any motor, coupling or bearing change;
- fan balancing when vibration rises;
- inspections of piping, supports and dust collection equipment;
- rebuild planning so worn units are scheduled into the next outage.
What about safety at power plants?
Safety is part of how every job is planned. We are an ISNetworld member contractor and Avetta prequalified. Every job starts with a job hazard analysis (JHA), and our crews work under lockout/tagout, confined space, hot work and fall protection programs. We follow your plant’s permits and procedures on top of our own. See our safety page.
Why do power plants call SSI?
Power plants call us because one crew can rebuild, weld, align, balance and fabricate. Fewer contractors on site means simpler coordination and a faster restart. When something fails between outages, call (219) 386-1506 any time or visit our emergency repair page. When downtime isn’t an option, we’re ready.

Power Generation FAQs
What services do you provide to power plants?
We provide equipment rebuilds, pipe welding, laser alignment, fan balancing, preventive maintenance, fabrication and 24/7 emergency repair for power generation plants. Our crews work on the pumps, fans, drives, piping and auxiliary equipment around turbines and boilers.
Can you balance and align power plant fans?
Yes. We balance fans and blowers on site and laser-align their drives. Balancing and alignment together cut vibration, which protects bearings and couplings and helps prevent forced outages. You get a written report with the before and after readings.
Do you work during planned power plant outages?
Yes. We scope the work with your team ahead of time, stage parts and fabrication in our Portage shop, and staff crews to fit the outage window. Planning before the unit comes down is what keeps the restart on schedule.
Can you rebuild pumps and gearboxes for a power plant?
Yes. We tear down, inspect and measure the unit, replace bearings, seals and worn parts, and machine replacements when parts are obsolete. We reinstall and laser-align the unit before it goes back in service.
Do you do pipe welding at power plants?
Yes. Our AWS certified welders fabricate and repair process and utility piping and supports. Where possible, we build spools in our shop ahead of an outage so field work goes faster.
What if equipment fails between outages?
Call (219) 386-1506 any time. The line is answered 24/7. Tell us what failed and we will tell you how fast a crew can get there. Our machine shop can fabricate parts when an OEM part isn't available.
