Fan Balancing & Rebuild Servicesin Northwest Indiana & Chicagoland

Quick overview

Industrial fan balancing corrects uneven mass on a fan rotor so it spins without excess vibration.

Industrial fan balancing corrects uneven mass on a fan rotor so it spins without excess vibration. SSI dynamically balances fans in place or in our Portage, Indiana shop, and rebuilds impellers, shafts and bearings on ID fans, baghouse fans, process fans and blowers across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland.

What does fan balancing and rebuild work include?

Bearings and shaftsReplace bearings, check fits and runout, repair or machine shaftsCooler, quieter running

  • In place or in the shopWe balance where it makes the most sense.
  • Balance plus alignmentWe fix both, because both cause vibration.
  • Before-and-after readingsYou get vibration readings for your files.

How does fan balancing work?

  1. Step 1: Assess

    Take vibration readings and inspect the rotor, bearings, base and drive.

  2. Step 2: Rule out other causes

    Check for buildup, loose parts, worn bearings, soft foot and misalignment.

  3. Step 3: Clean and repair

    Clean the rotor and repair worn blades, liners or welds as needed.

  4. Step 4: Balance

    Measure, add or remove correction weight, and repeat until vibration is in spec.

  5. Step 5: Align

    Laser align the drive or align belts and sheaves.

  6. Step 6: Verify and report

    Take final readings and give you a written report.

Signs a fan needs balancing

When does an industrial fan need balancing?

Call when a fan shows any of these, before it takes out its bearings.

  • Vibration that rises over time
  • Material buildup on the blades
  • Bearings running hot
  • Bearings failing early
  • Lost airflow or draft
  • After blade repair, cleaning or a rebuild

What is industrial fan balancing?

Fan balancing is the process of measuring and correcting uneven mass on a fan rotor so it runs smoothly at speed. SSI dynamically balances industrial fans in place or in our Portage shop, then checks the drive and bearings so the fan stays smooth. We do this for plants across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland.

An unbalanced rotor pulls on its bearings every revolution. Over time that load cracks welds, loosens bases, wears out bearings and shafts, and can damage the structure the fan sits on. Balancing fixes the cause.

Should a fan be balanced in place or in the shop?

Balance in place when the rotor is sound and only needs correction weight. Bring it to the shop when it needs blade or liner repair, a new shaft or heavy cleaning. In-place balancing avoids pulling the rotor. Shop balancing gives full access for repair.

In-place (field) balancing Shop balancing
Best for Sound rotors with buildup or small imbalance Rotors needing repair, new shafts or bearings
Downtime Usually shorter Longer, but the rotor comes back rebuilt
Access Rotor stays in its bearings and housing Full access for welding and machining
Next step Drive alignment and final readings Install, align and verify in place

What causes fan vibration besides imbalance?

Fan vibration also comes from misalignment, worn or loose bearings, soft foot, loose bases, bent shafts, belt problems and resonance. Balancing a fan that is really misaligned or loose doesn’t hold. We check the common causes with basic vibration analysis before we add a single weight.

We look at where the vibration is strongest, in which direction, and at what frequency relative to running speed. That tells us whether we are chasing imbalance, misalignment, looseness or a bearing. Then we fix the right thing first. Every fan job includes a check of the drive, and we laser align the motor and coupling or align belts and sheaves when they are out.

What does a fan rebuild include?

A fan rebuild restores the rotor, shaft and bearings so the fan can be balanced and run reliably again. We clean and inspect the impeller, repair blades and wear liners, replace bearings, check shaft fits and runout, and machine new shafts or parts in our shop when needed.

Typical fan rebuild work:

  • impeller cleaning, inspection and weld repair;
  • blade and wear liner replacement;
  • bearing replacement and housing fit checks;
  • shaft repair or a new shaft from our machine shop;
  • housing, inlet cone and damper repair;
  • final dynamic balance and drive alignment.

Fan rebuilds are part of our wider equipment rebuild work.

Why do ID fans and baghouse fans need extra attention?

ID fans and baghouse fans move dusty, sometimes hot or moist gas, so their blades build up and erode faster than clean-air fans. Buildup sheds unevenly and throws the rotor out of balance. Erosion thins blades and liners. These fans need regular cleaning, inspection and balancing.

When the fan pulls through a dust collector, the two systems affect each other. A baghouse with high differential pressure or broken bags changes what reaches the fan. We service both. See our baghouse and dust collection service and the article on signs an industrial fan needs balancing.

We balance and rebuild fans for steel, refractory, power, pulp and paper and chemical plants in Northwest Indiana, Chicagoland, Joliet, Kankakee and the Plymouth, Indiana area. If a fan is shaking now, call (219) 386-1506.

Fan Rebuilds & Balancing FAQs

What is industrial fan balancing?

Industrial fan balancing corrects uneven mass distribution on a fan rotor so it spins smoothly. A technician measures vibration at the bearings, calculates where the heavy spot is, and adds or removes correction weight until vibration is within spec. Balanced fans put less load on bearings, shafts and structures.

Can you balance a fan in place, or does it need to come to the shop?

Most fans can be balanced in place, in their own bearings and housing, which avoids pulling the rotor. Fans that need blade repair, a new shaft or major cleaning usually come to our Portage shop. We look at the fan first and tell you which approach makes more sense.

How do I know if my fan is out of balance?

The usual signs are vibration that climbs over time, hot or failing bearings, material buildup on the blades, and noise. Imbalance often shows up strongest at running speed. Misalignment, looseness and worn bearings can look similar, so we check for those before we balance.

Why does my fan keep going out of balance?

The usual causes are material building up on blades and then shedding unevenly, erosion of blades and liners, and loose or cracked parts. ID and baghouse fans see this often because of dust and moisture in the gas stream. Regular cleaning and inspection help a balance hold longer.

Do you rebuild industrial fans?

Yes. We rebuild fan rotors, impellers, shafts and bearings, repair blades and wear liners, and work on housings, inlets and dampers. Our machine shop makes shafts and parts that are no longer available. After a rebuild, we balance the rotor and align the drive.

Do you work on baghouse and ID fans?

Yes. Induced draft (ID) fans and baghouse fans are a big part of our fan work. They run in dusty, sometimes hot gas, so they wear and build up faster than clean-air fans. We also service the baghouse and dust collection systems they pull through.

Should a fan be laser aligned after balancing?

Yes, if the drive needs it. Imbalance and misalignment both cause vibration, and fixing one while ignoring the other leaves the problem half solved. We check the coupling or belt drive on every fan job and laser align it when it is out of tolerance.

How often should industrial fans be checked for vibration?

Most plants check critical fans on a regular route, often monthly or quarterly, and after any cleaning, blade repair or rebuild. Dirty-service fans like ID and baghouse fans usually need closer attention. We can build vibration checks into a preventive maintenance plan.
