Calls we get
What we're called for in Chicago
Packaging line down overnight
A south side food plant calls when a conveyor drive or filler gearbox quits on third shift. A crew diagnoses on site, welds or swaps what it can, and our shop makes any part the OEM can't ship in time.
24/7 Emergency RepairCracked support near the river
A bulk terminal or metal processor on the southeast side finds a cracked hopper bracket or a torn chute. Our welders repair it in place, so the steel doesn't have to come out to be fixed.
On-Site & Specialty WeldingMoving a line to another floor
A plant consolidating into one building needs a line moved past narrow doors and a freight elevator. We walk the route, check floor loads, plan the rig, then set, level and align at the new spot.
Plant RelocationAdding a tie-in to a stainless line
A beverage or dairy plant wants a new valve cluster or CIP return added. We pre-fab the sanitary spools in Portage and TIG weld them in during your sanitation window.

How we get to Chicago
The route
Crews run west from Portage on I-94 and the Borman Expressway, then take the Bishop Ford or the Skyway onto the south and southeast sides. Downtown and the near west side are reached by the Dan Ryan.
The local industrial base
Chicago's southeast side grew up around steel along the Calumet River, and it still runs metal processors, fabricators and bulk terminals. The south and southwest sides carry food processing, commercial baking, beverage, packaging and chemical blending. Many of these plants sit in older, multi-story buildings with tight doors and floor load limits.

Which Chicago neighborhoods does SSI work in most?
Most of our Chicago work is on the south and southeast sides, the parts of the city closest to our Portage shop. That covers the Calumet River district, the south side food and packaging plants, and the southwest side industrial corridors. Downtown is about 55 minutes away in normal traffic, and we take calls citywide.
The southeast side runs the same kind of heavy gear we service across the Indiana line. Food plants farther west run lighter, cleaner equipment on tighter schedules. One crew can cover both.
What makes rigging in a Chicago plant harder?
Rigging is harder because many Chicago plants were built long before the equipment they run today. Doors are narrow, floors have load limits, and the street outside may not allow a crane for long. Every equipment installation or plant relocation here starts with a walk of the route, not with the truck.
What we check before anything moves:
- door and elevator sizes against the largest piece;
- floor capacity along the path and at the final location;
- crane or forklift access from the street, and when it’s allowed;
- what has to be disconnected, and who reconnects it.
If old equipment has to come out first, our industrial demolition crew cuts it out and clears the space.
Can one crew handle welding and millwright work in the same visit?
Yes. Our millwright crews carry welding rigs, and our welders know how to set and align equipment. That matters in a city plant where a second contractor means another gate check-in and another day. A cracked base gets welded on site, the machine gets reset, and the coupling gets aligned before we leave.

Local questions
Chicago FAQs
How long does it take SSI to reach a Chicago plant?
Our Portage shop is roughly 42 miles from downtown Chicago, about 55 minutes in normal traffic. Plants on the southeast side and near the Calumet River are often closer. Expressway traffic can change that a lot, so when you call (219) 386-1506 we give you a realistic estimate rather than a guaranteed response time.
Can SSI weld on site at a Chicago plant?
Yes. Our AWS certified welders bring portable rigs and do structural, pipe and equipment repairs in place, from cracked frames and hoppers to stainless process tube. We work under your hot work permit, set up fire watch as your site requires, and start every job with a job hazard analysis.
Can you work in older, multi-story Chicago buildings?
Yes. Many Chicago plants run in older buildings with narrow doors, freight elevators and floor load limits. Before an install or move, we walk the route, check doorways and floor capacity, and plan the rigging so equipment goes in without damage to the building or the machine. We also plan street access for cranes and trucks.
Do you remove old equipment from Chicago plants?
Yes. Our industrial demolition work covers retired machines, conveyors, tanks and structural steel, including torch cutting and rigging out. Clearing old equipment is often the first step of an install or a move, so one crew can handle both ends of the job and you deal with one contractor.
