On-Site & Specialty Welding Servicesin Northwest Indiana
Quick overview
SSI provides on-site welding at your plant with mobile welding rigs and AWS certified welders, plus specialty and repair welding in our Portage, Indiana shop. We run MIG, TIG, stick and flux-core on carbon steel, stainless and alloys, and we send welders on site 24/7 for emergency repairs. That includes heavy equipment repair, hardfacing and NDT coordination for plants across Northwest Indiana and Chicagoland.
What welding does SSI do?
| Work | What we do | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Field welding | Mobile rigs for on-site repair, installation and tie-ins | Repairs made where the equipment sits, without pulling it |
| Repair welding | Cracks, broken brackets, worn housings and frames on heavy equipment | Equipment back in service without a new part |
| Hardfacing | Wear-resistant overlay on chutes, liners, buckets and wear parts | Longer life on parts that see abrasion and impact |
| Stainless & alloy | TIG and other processes on stainless and alloy steels | Sound welds on materials that need careful heat control |
| Structural & pipe | Welding on platforms, supports and process pipe | Joints made to the procedure your job requires |

How does a welding repair job run?
Step 1: Assess
Look at the part, the material and what caused the failure.
Step 2: Plan
Pick the process, filler and heat control. Complete the JHA and hot work permit.
Step 3: Prep
Clean, grind out cracks and fit the joint. Preheat when the material calls for it.
Step 4: Weld
Weld to the procedure, controlling heat input and distortion.
Step 5: Inspect
Visual inspection, with NDT coordinated when your spec calls for it.

When to call
When do you need a specialty or field welder?
Most welding calls start with one of these.
- Cracked frame, housing or bracket
- Wear parts eaten up by abrasion
- Breakdown that can't wait for a new part
- Stainless or alloy that needs careful welding
- Equipment too big to move to a shop
- Weld repairs planned for an outage
What is specialty and field welding?
Specialty and field welding is welding work that needs more than a standard shop setup: repairs on heavy equipment, welding on stainless and alloy steels, hardfacing worn parts, and welding on site where the equipment sits. SSI does this work with AWS certified welders, in our Portage, Indiana shop or at your plant with mobile welding rigs.
Most plant welding is repair work. A bracket cracks. A chute wears through. A housing breaks during a breakdown. The fix has to be strong, fast and safe to do in an operating plant. That is where a crew with millwright and fabrication experience helps. We look at why the part failed, not just where.
Which welding processes do you use?
We use MIG, TIG, stick and flux-core welding, and choose based on material, thickness, position and conditions. Here is how they compare in plant work.
| Process | Best for | Where we use it |
|---|---|---|
| MIG (gas metal arc) | Fast, clean welds on steel and aluminum | Shop fabrication, structural work |
| TIG (gas tungsten arc) | Precise welds on thin, stainless and alloy material | Stainless, sanitary, critical joints |
| Stick (shielded metal arc) | Thick sections, outdoor and dirty conditions | Field repair, heavy equipment |
| Flux-core | High deposition, good in wind | Field structural, heavy repair, hardfacing |
Carbon, stainless and alloy
Carbon steel covers most structural and equipment work. Stainless needs careful heat control and clean prep to keep its corrosion resistance. Alloy steels and castings often need preheat, specific filler metal and slow cooling to avoid cracking. We check what the part is made of before we strike an arc.
Why does field welding save time?
Field welding saves time because the equipment does not have to be disconnected, rigged out and hauled to a shop. Our crews bring mobile welding rigs to the machine, make the repair and get it back in service. On large frames, housings and structures, that can be the difference between a shift and a week.
Field work comes with field hazards. Every job starts with a job hazard analysis (JHA). We work under your hot work permits, set fire watch, follow lockout/tagout and use fall protection where the work is at height. A safe worksite is a productive worksite.
What is repair welding and hardfacing?
Repair welding restores cracked, broken or worn parts, and hardfacing adds a wear-resistant layer to parts that see abrasion or impact. Both are common in steel mills, refractory plants and anywhere material handling is rough on equipment.
Typical work includes:
- crack repair on frames, housings, bases and brackets;
- rebuilding worn shafts, bores and wear surfaces (with machine shop finishing when needed);
- hardfacing chutes, liners, crusher parts, buckets and screw flights;
- broken or cracked components during an emergency repair.
How do you check weld quality?
Our welders inspect every weld visually and work to the procedure your job requires. When your spec calls for nondestructive testing (NDT), we coordinate it with qualified inspection providers. That can include magnetic particle, dye penetrant, ultrasonic or radiographic testing, and you get the results.
Where does welding fit with SSI’s other work?
Welding runs through almost everything we do. It is the core of our custom metal fabrication, process pipe fabrication and sanitary welding and fabrication work. Our welders also support millwright crews on rebuilds, installs and retrofits.

On-Site & Specialty Welding FAQs
What welding processes does SSI use?
Our AWS certified welders run MIG (gas metal arc), TIG (gas tungsten arc), stick (shielded metal arc) and flux-core welding. We pick the process based on the material, thickness, position, access and whether the work is in the shop or outdoors. Stick and flux-core handle most outdoor field work well.
Do you offer on-site welding?
Yes. Our crews bring mobile welding rigs to your plant for repairs, installations and tie-ins. Field welding lets us fix equipment where it sits, which is often faster than pulling a large part and hauling it to a shop. We follow your hot work permit and fire watch rules.
What materials can you weld?
We weld carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and alloy steels. Some alloys and cast parts need preheat, specific filler metals and controlled cooling to avoid cracking. We look at the material before we start and set the procedure to suit it.
What is hardfacing?
Hardfacing is welding a layer of wear-resistant alloy onto a part that sees abrasion, impact or both. It is common on chutes, liners, crusher parts, buckets and screw flights. Rebuilding worn surfaces with hardfacing usually costs less than a new part and can extend service life.
Can you repair cracked heavy equipment?
Often, yes. We find the end of the crack, grind it out, prep the joint and weld it back with the right filler and heat control. Some cracks point to a design or loading problem, so we look at why it failed and may recommend reinforcement.
Do you do weld inspection and NDT?
Every weld gets a visual inspection from our crew. When your job or spec requires nondestructive testing (NDT), such as magnetic particle, dye penetrant, ultrasonic or radiographic testing, we coordinate it with qualified inspection providers and pass along the results.
Are your welders certified?
Yes. SSI uses AWS certified welders. If your job calls for a specific welding procedure or welder qualification, send it with the request so we can confirm the right people and the right procedure before the job starts, not after a weld fails inspection.
Can you weld during an emergency breakdown?
Yes. Our phone line is answered 24/7 at (219) 386-1506. Tell us what broke, the material and where it is. We will tell you how quickly a welder can get there and whether the repair makes more sense in the field or in our Portage shop.
